Unfilled Positions List Timing

March 18, 2008 Applicant matched and unmatched information posted to the NRMP Web site at 12:00 noon eastern time. Please log in to the NRMP and find out whether you matched or not. You won't be able to find out where did you match yet. Good luck! Filled and unfilled results for individual programs posted to the NRMP Web site at 11:30 am eastern time. Locations of all unfilled positions are released at 12:00 noon eastern time. Unmatched applicants may begin contacting unfilled programs at 12:00 noon eastern time.

Question: Why the programs get to know that they have unfilled positions 30 minutes earlier?

Answer: Unfilled programs have a very challenging day ahead. They need to fill their positions without sacrificing quality. Apparently they did not do a good job in the match if some positions left unfilled. It is a natural selection process. If a program invites too many candidates with great qualifications, they are risking to have unfilled positions as these candidates are likely to rank some other programs higher and therefore overall program level goes down because they have to find somebody in the Scramble without actually being able to find out much details. If a program invites mostly candidates with low scores, etc. its quality goes down as it becomes less and less competitive. The goal is to get the right blend of people, so that the program gets filled in the match, with people that match program criteria the best. Now, back to the question. Programs have just 30 minutes to figure out who out of their ERAS applicants may have not found a position in the match. There is also a common misconception that programs invite people they had interview with. If a program had an interview with somebody and the program has unfilled positions, they did not rank this candidate. This means they did not want this person in the program no matter what.
